For this project, I was assigned to design and produce a handmade, hardcover book that explored some subculture of NYC. I decided to showcase people who play chess in the various parks around Manhattan. In many ways, it feels like chess in Greenwich Village is a relic of a bygone NYC, or at least a connection between two eras. Using classic documentary style photography, I wanted to capture an authentic film aesthetic that was displayed in disjointed, largely experimental layouts interspersed with bold, full-spread photos.
